no.5 socialism (Tokesさん)
In such economic turmoil, i was wondering how the French economic system could withstand. Although I believe its system is helpful to many foreigners and the unfortunate who are unemployed. (the government offers quite a lot of help to foriengers, univeristy tuition for public schools are free, the unemplyed receive a descent help from the gov for quite a long time, and almost all if not all of the medical fees are covered for the french and non french). I think the US system is a little to far to the right and Japan is undecided to make any steps, i believe a little more of sticks could be of help for the french economy and europe as a whole. Excluding the UK.

One of the founding principals of the European Union is that all European citizens will have access to proper healthcare, education, social welfare etc. The primary function of government (and indeed the EU) is to look after its citizens in good times and in bad. Obviously these principals are tougher to maintain as a single country so by pooling the resources of Europe together, the idea is that we share the burden.
No one has an idea of how this crisis will turn out, perhaps some of the features of the welfare state will disappear in France.
